Matrix edit mode (drag and drop)

Matrix edit mode (drag and drop)

Matrix edit mode is built for fast staffing and structure modeling.

It lets you adjust team placement, role placement, and type distribution while keeping changes explicit through the tray.

Availability

Matrix edit mode is shown only in editable contexts:

  • Live View
  • active editable scenario

In snapshot/archived contexts, Matrix remains view-only.

What you can do in edit mode

  • drag actors between team columns
  • move actors to unassigned bin
  • select an actor to edit allocation percentage or primary/secondary team status
  • add another team placement for the selected actor
  • open the actor profile modal to update profile fields such as FTE
  • move teams across type columns
  • move position cards where supported
  • create people, agents, teams, and positions directly from matrix when your permissions allow it
  • double-click or right-click teams, actors, and position cards to open their existing edit modals
  • edit role, title, and position FTE through the position edit modal
  • delete people, agents, teams, and positions from Matrix when the existing product permissions allow it

All staged edits are queued in the change tray, then applied together. While the tray has pending changes, Matrix previews the proposed canvas state immediately. Pending cards and team headers use accent styling and the tray shows a Previewing badge so you can distinguish proposed state from saved data. Team HC, FTE, and cost totals update from the proposed placements so the compact team cards reflect the structure you are building before Apply. Profile, team, and position modal saves refresh Matrix without resetting the current pan/zoom position where possible. Delete/archive actions use confirmation dialogs and return you to the same Matrix context after completion.

Standard workflow

  1. Switch to Edit.
  2. Stage drag/drop changes.
  3. Use the selected actor panel for allocation, primary team, or extra placement adjustments.
  4. Use modal edit actions for profile, team, and position details.
  5. Review the previewed canvas state alongside the tray commands.
  6. Apply or clear the tray to return the canvas to the last saved state.
  7. Validate result in matrix and charts.

For large changes, repeat in smaller batches to keep review clean.

Allocation and membership nuance

When moving contributors, ensure resulting placements and allocations match intent:

  • confirm primary/secondary implications
  • verify allocation percentages after rebalancing
  • use actor FTE for the person/agent capacity and position FTE for the seat expectation
  • check unassigned bucket intentionally (not accidentally)

Quality checks after apply

  • target teams reflect expected actor mix
  • role rows show intended distribution
  • no unexpected unassigned drift
  • scenario deltas align with modeled changes
